FOR ADVANCED

Masks, statues and other objects hold deep meaning for the culture and the individuals who make use of them. In Western Africa, wooden masks depicting humans, animals or mythical creatures are among the most commonly encountered art objects. During the mask ceremony, the wearer enters a deep trance, in which he communicates with his ancestors. African masks often represent a spirit, which is believed to possess the wearer. Traditional African art of this kind made a tremendous impact on many influential European and American artists, including Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani and Henri Matisse.
