The Valkyries (from the old Norse as Valkyrja, “choosers of the slain”) are disir, minor female deities who served odin. The Valkyries’ purpose was to decide the victors of battles and wars, as well as to determine who had been the most heroic of those who died in battle. A key element of the imagery surrounding the Valkyries is a majestic expression of vigour, a strong form of energy that becomes evident when viewing these mythical beings. Like the stories that this art is based upon, it seems timeless and full of motion, challenging artists to develop new interpretations and beautiful designs.
