Theme of the Month: “Sparkling Springtime”
Spring is nature’s way of saying, “Let’s party!” Everyone’s smiling and dreaming of romance, and the world is in bloom. This euphoric state of renewal has long been reflected in fabrics and furnishings. Indeed, floral patterns for spring haven’t gone out of style since the 1950s; but this year’s interpretation riffs on a 1970s trend—modern girls are opting for small-scale prints with a boho sensibility. Homeware is no exception—from planters to plates, it’s flower power all the way!
Découpage is a beautiful, centuries-old craft technique whose name comes from the French word découper, meaning “to cut out’. It involves cutting out shapes—usually from magazines or patterned papers—and gluing them onto decorative household objects, then applying several layers of varnish or lacquer. Eventually the “stuck on” appearance of the cutouts disappears and the object starts to develop a patina that makes it look as though it is hand-painted or inlaid.
