Trend of the Month: Long Live Love!
The great thing about being a do-it-yourself enthusiast is that we’re unfazed by having to come up with gift ideas for big occasions—we simply know that handmade gifts have an edge over shop-bought ones. It’s just as well, since Valentine’s Day is almost upon us.
But did you know that the earliest Valentine’s Day cards, back in the 1800s, were not intended to be exclusively for lovers at all, but simply a way of expressing affection between friends and family? Some countries still abide by this interpretation: Finland celebrates Ystavanpaiva (“Friendship Day”) and Mexico calls it Dia del amor y la Amistad (“Day of Love and Friendship”).
So let’s acknowledge the fact that friendship is at the very least just as important as romance, which means affection, loyalty and understanding deserve recognition, too. Show your feelings with beautiful handcrafted gifts that show you care—a subtly crystallized jewelry box for keepsakes or trinkets, or a charm bracelet with special meaning. Alternatively, a diary whose contents will remain secret thanks to its crystal heart lock, and a crystal heart-trimmed pencil for recording those innermost thoughts. Beautiful gifts made by you come with lasting memories—of you!
Ceralun: This is an epoxy resin consisting of two components specially developed for use with Swarovski crystals. Make sure the surface you are working with is clean, dry, and free of oil and grease. Mix the two components very thoroughly in a 1:1 ratio, then carefully press Ceralun onto the relevant part, then set the crystals of your choice into it using a pair of tweezers. You’ll generally have three hours to work with the mixture; then it take 72 hours to harden.
Gluing on Styrofoam: Styrofoam is plastic that has been whipped up like a milkshake to make it incredibly lightweight. Use Styrofoam glue, which has been specially formulated to suit this material.
Riveting: Swarovski crystal rivets give standout sparkle to all kinds of material. Just make a hole in the material (in this case, leather) using a needle. Then push the crystal part through the hole, turn it over so that the side with the crystal is safely facing down into a rubber mat, then apply the metal back part and very gently tap it into place with a light hammer.
